Okuragahama and Kanegahama

If you are looking to surf then the places to go are really Kanegahama and Okuragahama. They offer really good surfing and people come from all over Japan to surf at these beaches (I think that there is even a member of Glay (or another popular boy band, I've forgotten) that comes to surf here every year). Both can get really busy with surfers and parking can be difficult.
Okuragahama is at the southern end of Hyuga. It has toilets and parking (but it gets full, real full!). There is sort of a surf shop just at the turn off from route 10 where I think you can hire boards. There are also a couple more surf shops just a bit further along as you come into Hyuga. Okuragahama is also the only place in Japan where Go stones are produced, you can see them being carved at a rest stop/omiyagi shop just a bit further along route 10 (which also has good cheax creams).
Kanegahama beach is really long and starts just south of hyuga city. There is cheap (surfers) ryokan (on route 10 a little south of hyuga city) where most surfers to park to access the beach. There is also a Family Mart opposite (do you need more) just opposite and there is a new surf shop up from that on the seaside of the road. These beach are not so busy with swimmers, but they are with surfers!

This is the beach looking down from the omiyage center (on a day when it wasn't sunny). The blue roofed building is the new surf shop above Kanegahama. It's well situated! Just behind it, almost out of view, is the ryokan. The beach again, showing more of the wet stuff. Not good waves on this day.

Surfers hoping for the waves to pick up (they didn't that day, if you were wondering).
